I had the pleasure of sharing the same tribe with Yahya in Warung Pintar, and he was the first Interaction Designer for whom I was involved with in hiring.

Previously, we hadn’t had any IXDs in our tribe, and our needs were slightly different from the other tribes in our company - however, together with HR and our other IXDs, we redesigned the hiring procedure for IXDs.

When Yahya came in for the interview, we were initially skeptical about him - the tools he’s used previously were different from the ones we were using in our team, and the PMs were looking for someone with a more matching set of hard skills to our requirements.

We decided to proceed with Yahya to the test phase, and to our surprise, he was the only candidate who did field research in his test and actually talked to potential users who were similar to the user base. Yahya is a naturally user-centric designer, and he actually enjoys getting feedback on his work from the users themselves, which set him apart from the other candidates at the time, and his communication skills were also up to par (knowing how to stay unbiased and neutral can be hard when it’s YOUR WORK that’s being criticized).

As a researcher, I found it very easy and natural to work with him, and if you’re worried about feedback loops about products in the testing phase, you won’t need to with Yahya.

Yahya not only shares his knowledge but also actively listens to others, encouraging diverse perspectives. He willingly gathers input and offers thoughtful feedback to the design team. As a lead and senior designer, Yahya consistently dedicated his time to teach and guide the team, treating everyone as equals, with no boundaries between senior and junior members.
