Delivery method: Self Pick Up

How I helped Semaai save up to 3% on overall variable costs by enabling self pick up as a delivery method

About the Company
Semaai is an Agri-tech start-up that aims to harness the potential of technology to improve livelihoods and incomes of farmers
Background Problem
Delivery is a variable cost that reduces the margin of the company. Meanwhile, during urgent need, customers need to have their order to be delivered as fast as possible, therefore decreasing the fleet utilization and increasing the logistics cost
Project Goal
To reduce the logistics cost by utilizing the customers' own vehicles to do self pick up on Semaai's warehouses
My Role
As the UI/UX designer I helped the company by creating user flows and crafting the user interface
Impact
By enabling customers to do self pick up on their orders, Semaai have successfully save up to 3% on overall variable cost

What I have designed

Previously
There is no self pick up among the existing delivery methods
Improvement
Enabling the customers to select 'self pick up' as their delivery method
Hypothesis
By having a 'self pick up' as delivery method it will help customers with urgent need to get their products as soon as possible while reducing Semaai's logistics cost
Condition
Semaai have several warehouses and hubs for each specific region. The stocks are spread among them
Design
A list of pick up locations appear upon selecting self pick up as the delivery method
Consideration & Tradeoff
There are three important information the users need to know prior selecting a pick up location. They are:
1. The pick-up location's address
2. The distance between their kiosk and the pick-up location
3. The pick-up location's operational hour

However, due to technical constraints, we could not show the distance. Maybe in future improvement we can.
Condition
Users who were already choosing self pick-up before this feature was developed typically had urgent needs. However, to encourage this behavior among other users, we need a reward as a trigger
Design
We decided to offer a discount to users who select 'self pick-up' as their reward, which actually costs less than logistics. This creates a win-win solution for both the company and the users
Hypothesis
Offering a discount in the early phase of the rollout will help increase adoption of the self pick-up delivery method
Condition
Semaai have several warehouses and hubs for each specific region. The users might not know where they are because we have always doing the delivery to their kiosks
Design
In order to ease the self pick up experience, we enable the users to use the google map driving direction feature in one click from the order history and order detail page
Hypothesis
Google driving direction feature will help the users to do self pick up to the selected pick up location, so they won't need to worry of not finding the location

I opened Mixpanel & UX Cam, getting insight on user’s search behavior pattern.Here is what I found:
